LETTER TO THE CHURCH IN SARDIS – REV.3: 1-6
In the last of this series, we saw the danger of compromise in the Christian life. We also discovered more of the blessings awaiting the overcomers. Today, we want to study the letter to the Church at Sardis, the dead church. May the Lord speak to our hearts today in Jesus Name. Amen.
- ETERNAL WATCHFULNESS IS THE PRICE OF SALVATION.
Sardis was a wealthy city but its inhabitants were spiritless, soft and lazy after 2 defeats in battle and one great earthquake. The Church there had also lost its vitality and became a corpse instead of a living church. God told them to watch out or else they will be totally dead. Watchfulness should be the constant attitude of the Christian because eternal watchfulness is the price of Salvation.
Isa. 11:1-2- There shall come forth a [a]Rod from the [b]stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall [c]grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
1 Tim. 5:6- 6 But she who lives in [b]pleasure is dead while she lives.
Luke 15:24- 24 for this my son was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ And they began to be merry.
Rom. 6:13- And do not present your members as [a]instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Eph. 2:1- And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins. Verse 5: 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
Rom. 13:11-12- And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand. Therefore let us cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.
1 Cor. 16:13- 13 Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong
Matt. 26:41- Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Acts 20:29-31- For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. 30 Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking [h]perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves. 31 Therefore watch, and remember that for three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
Rev. 3:2- 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before [b]God.
Matt. 24:42-43- 42 Watch therefore, for you do not know what [g]hour your Lord is coming. 43 But know this, that if the master of the house had known what [h]hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into.
Mark 13:37- 37 And what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!”
1 Thess. 5:6. 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be [a]sober.
- THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A FEW WHO ARE TOTALLY DEVOTED TO GOD
There were a few Christians, even in Sardis, who remained totally loyal to God. In ant Church and in any situation, there will always be the faithful few, may God grant you the grace to be one of them so that you too can walk with God in white with your name permanently in the Book of life.
